I absolutely love reading to my son and was so intrigued when I first heard about this brand new children’s book from first time author and mompreneur Joanna Liu. I’m so pleased she agreed to join in with the Silberzahn Style Christmas Gift Countdown and to share her thoughts in my exclusive interview below.

Why do you recommend this particular item as a Silberzahn Style Christmas gift list essential?
‘When I Wake Up’ is a quirky tale about a child who is grumpy at the prospect of going to bed… that is, until her curiosity takes over and the magic of imagination begins. Aimed at 0-4 years olds, this delightful bedtime story has a fun rhythm, whimsical illustrations, and is a perfect way to wind down the day and get little ones ready for sleep.
This book makes for a great Siberzahn Style Christmas gift list essential. The high quality, gloss board book, printed in the USA, looks stylish and holds up to toddlers messy little fingers! The babies love the rhymes, the toddlers love the colourful balloons and bunting, and the adults love trying to spot the little snail hidden on each page! The story itself puts a positive spin on going to bed and is a favourite for kids and adults!

What do you actually do?
I’m a stay at home mum turned children’s author.

What was your first job?
Fresh out of university I knew I wanted to work in fashion, so I packed up, moved to London (as close to Portobello Market as I could afford) and got a job as an Allocator at Kookai.

What motivated you to start your current venture?
After 10 years working in the fashion industry, I gave up my career to follow my diplomat husband around the world and start a family. I’m lucky to have had this opportunity, I’m now a mum to 2 fantastic kids (6 months and 3 years) and we have been to some amazing places, living in Cairo and in Germany. Whilst I miss working in fashion, I have been busy using my spare time to follow another passion. I have applied my appreciation for aesthetics and craftsmanship to create my own children’s book.

What inspires you to get out of bed every day!
My children! Of course I miss having lay-ins at the weekends, haha, but having children to care for gives a whole new meaning to life that makes getting out of bed easy.

Can you describe yourself in 3 words?
Many years ago my sister gave me the nickname Jomama because I’m caring, sensible and, well, slightly … bossy … it gets things done!

What do you do as a special treat for yourself?
A cup of tea, some chocolate and a Scandinavian thriller to read.

What does the word “Style” mean to you
Having the confidence to be yourself.

How would you describe your personal style?
Mum chic. Does that count as a style? I can’t remember the last time I wear my Louboutins, my uniform now consists of practical J Crew ballet flats, Seven jeans and MeandEm stripey tops.

Who is your idol?
Jessica Alba. I find it so inspirational that becoming a mum gave her a great idea for a company and, in a very short time, she turned that idea into a billion dollar brand.

What’s your life motto?
Be thoughtful to other people.

What’s your advice to fellow entrepreneurs?
It’s old advice, but so true – pursue what you love. Entrepreneurship is a 24/7 adventure that can easily consume your life. You have to have passion for what you pursue, because without it you will burn yourself out, and you will start hating what you are doing.

Is there a career highlight you’d like to share?
Ask me again in 2 years, maybe by then I’ll have turned ‘When I Wake Up’ into a billion dollar brand. Haha!!!
