Maternity Style Tips and tricks part 1

As I’m half way through with my second pregnancy, I thought I’d share some of my personal tips and tricks for maintaining something approaching ones own style during the maternity minefield. I hope you find it useful! Feel free to add your own tips in the comments below.

  • Once your clothes start to get uncomfortable and just trying to get dressed in the morning turns into a headache … Remove all the clothes that are too small, as in EVERYTHING you know doesn’t fit and won’t fit with a growing bump, that way you know what’s left works, you have an idea of what you’ll need to get through till after baby’s arrival and you’ll reduce the likelihood of that 7am fuckkkkk I’m huge, my clothes don’t fit que hormonal melt down and other half backing for the door!
  • Ease the bloated tummy, maternity trouser purchasing headache by using a hair band on your regular trousers this may well take you through the first trimester!

Here are a few Bump basics that  I would strongly recommend.

  • Invest in a good pair of maternity black jeans as these will get you through 85% of clothes dilemmas. Over the bump or under the bump is up to you.I wore out my H&M ones first time round! H&M.com This time I purchased a brilliant off-black pair by German maternity brand Love2Wait. My pair are currently reduced on Amazon.de!!! available from Amazon More styles are available from Frankfurt boutique NoaBoa I also bought a classic black pair from www.seraphine.com (see cover photo) which i’m sadly, finding a little disappointing as they need to be washed after every wear.  However…
  • For Black maternity leggings.  Seraphine faired much better. I found dresses became my go to comfort outfit, making me feel feminine and still myself and providing many more outfit options than jeans. Please note, on leggings invest in a better quality pair to ensure they are not see through, not a good look generally, somehow even more disturbing when pregnant! Here’s the link to the ones I chose; http://www.seraphine.com !
  • Flat shoes will become your friend and are useful post arrival for getting out and about with that pram. It’s also possible that due to stretching ligaments you feet will grow alongside the bump which can make doing up laces another headache! There’s lots of lovely ballet pumps and loafers out there to choose from but my favourite flats are by the independent brand Cocorose  London and I’ve got my eye on these Black and Silver lovelies www.cocoroselondon.com There are oodles to choose from online including sneakers, loafers, ballet pumps and slides in a dizzying array of colours and styles!

  • Something I learnt following pregnancy one was NOT to squirrel favourite items away for fear of stretching them, post birth breastfeeding changed what I need to wear anyway and naturally it took awhile to return to pre-pregnancy shape, essentially meaning a lot of my wardrobe got ignored for almost 2 years! Bonkers! For pregnancy 2 I’ve been on a bit of a #nonmaternitymaternity style mission and have been able to add a few pieces to my wardrobe that are 100% my usual style and totally bump friendly.
  • I’ve been fortunate to have both my pregnancies over winter, which means Jumper dresses became my style go to.  Something that non maternity shop COS does particularly well! I bought this dress when I found out I was pregnant and haven’t stopped wearing it since! Check out www.cosstores.com for multiple dress options.

  • Treat yourself to some lovely comfy pyjamas. Pre baby, it’s really important to feel comfortable and rested as much as possible plus if you’re working it’s great to come home and pop something super cosy on and put those feet up in style!
    • Tip: During Birth, a button through nightshirt prevents the need for repeated changing and protects ones modesty. Post birth, a button up classic pyjama style is so useful for breast feeding. Order a generous size for maximum comfort. Check out these lovelies from Marks and Spencers as featured in my Christmas gift Countdown recommendations.
  • It’s cold and cosy feet aka funky slippers are a must… I love these fabulous faux fur booties by Helen Moore Faux Fur, and what’s even better is I have 2 pairs available in size 5-6 available to order by simply clicking here! Featured in my Christmas Gift Countdown find out more here.

And finally…

  • If money is not an issue but staying on trend is, then do check out the rather wonderful website www.nineinthemirror.com The website tests out designer looks with baby bumps and offers styling advice for different stages of your pregnancy. The brands featured are certainly at the luxury end of the market but the majority are not maternity brands, leaving the potential for more wear post bump!

NINE IN THE MIRROR was born when fashion buyer Adriana Chryssicopoulos and online marketer Tatiana de Boisanger met while pregnant and in mutual despair over what to wear. The site features expert editorial content alongside a hand-picked selection of straight-off-the-runway designer looks, in styles and sizes to suit women in their first to third trimester – and beyond. Proving that pregnancy is no obstacle to great style, NINE IN THE MIRROR is the ultimate fashion destination for expectant women and new mothers.

I think what’s brilliant about this site is the sizing advice. They try every piece on with varied sizes of pregnancy bump, so you can trust that the advice is right!

It’s great to have the basics sorted but adding individuality to my outfits is definitely on my wish list, comfort is key, practicality essential. I am running after a toddler with this pregnancy after all!
