  • The Essex Serpent by Sarah Grace Perry

Waterstones book of the year, A Sunday Times best seller, Christmas Number 1! READ IT! GIFT IT! Written by a lady I had the pleasure of going to school with, it’s a hearty and enthusiastic thumbs up!

Set in the brooding marshes of late Victorian Essex, the recently-widowed Cora Seagrave relinquishes the staid predictability of the capital to pursue rumour of a great, unknown beast, a ‘living fossil’ dwelling in the county’s desolate borderlands. Seagrave’s obsession – the enthusiasms of a new kind of independent woman, brimming with enquiry – bring her into conflict with Ransome, the local vicar seeking an oasis of faith; it’s a quarrel that ultimately kindles a far more personal tension. Beyond, a brilliantly-drawn cast describe a world that is itself at odds, an edgeland where tradition slides inexorably toward the modern.

Cora, you cannot always keep yourself away from things that hurt you. We all wish we could, but we cannot: to live at all is to be bruised.

Available from all good bookstores as well as online here

  • The Good Immigrant edited by Nikesh Shula

One of the things that bring me great comfort in today’s uncertain political climate, and near constant global conflict, is the fact that voices can’t be silenced and that the bad is more often than not, balanced with truth, honesty and most importantly awareness. I was introduced to this book by one of my best friends and wife of one of the contributing authors.

Editor Nikesh Shukla has brought together 21 black, Asian and minority ethnic voices emerging in Britain today, The Good Immigrant explores why immigrants come to the UK, why they stay and what it means to be ‘other’ in a country that doesn’t seem to want you, doesn’t truly accept you – however many generations you’ve been here – but still needs you for its diversity monitoring forms.

Available to order directly from Amazon and all good book stores.

I sincerely hope you have enjoyed my recommendations and continue to support independent small businesses, designers and creatives into the New Year.
